Character playbooks

These are the rules I've been using in various games of D&D for the last ten years or so. I play a lot with new players and with very short sessions, so the rules are optimised for fast play and quick pickup.

There are a million OSR rulesets in the world already, so I don't think this is going to change your life or anything, but there are a few ideas I think are worth stealing:

  • Character sheets as class playbooks.
  • No to-hit roll.
  • Class-specific pick-lists for equipment.
  • Demi-humans which work very differently from humans.
  • Stunt mechanics.

The art is by @goblin_sorcerer, who is amazing and you should check out her work.

Download the PDFs here.

Of course, no one plays any version of D&D for more than 5 minutes without wanting to tinker with the rules, so here are the sheets as Google Docs:

I guess these are CC-BY or something like that? Feel free to re-use them, but please credit me if you do so. I asked the artist about the licensing rights for her work and she was like "I don't know about any of that, just do what you want" so do with that what you will.

I have many more dumb projects, I assure you. Check out my main RPG page.
